Catkins

Catkin Ecology began as two energetic young ecologists, camping amongst the botanical richness of Breadalbane, while mapping the remnant populations of montane willows. We recorded over 1100 individuals and established the area as one of the most important sites for remnant montane willow populations in Scotland.

We have since delivered a range of ecological consultancy, survey and seed collection projects for organisations including local councils, private estates, James Hutton Institute, Woodland Trust Scotland, The John Muir Trust, Forestry and Land Scotland & The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.

Who we are

Julia Stewart, MA

I am a dedicated tree-enthusiast and botanist with experience in upland plant ID, environmental history, data analysis and conservation. I have published articles on mountain woodland in Reforesting Scotland, The Mountain Woodland Action Group bulletin and presented a short talk at the BSBI conference in November 2023 on the potential expansion of mountain woodland in Scotland.

I am currently studying a part-time PhD at University of St Andrews on the impacts of mountain woodland restoration on biodiversity.

Innes Manders, BSc

I care deeply about the conservation of Scotland's key habitats and species. I have experience in machair and upland plant ID, breeding bird surveys and a keen interest in Scotland's small, yet vital mammal species. Having graduated from St Andrews with MA Geography, I also have skills in GIS and data analysis.

An ideal morning sees us surveying otters, red squirrels or breeding birds alongside a flask of hot chocolate.
